Faros Armenistis in Mykonos – An Experience You Shouldn’t Miss Out on

Mykonos attractions are numerous – this spot has something for everyone. Still, many think that this is one of the party islands that has nothing to offer in terms of culture and history. This couldn’t be further from the truth – there are many important spots and landmarks, and Faros Armenistis is one of them. We couldn’t recommend it enough – it’s a beautiful spot that will take your breath away. Add it to the travel list of things to do – you will thank us later.

What Makes Mykonos Armenistis Lighthouse One of the Most Trending Historic Attractions on the Island?

This landmark represents the once glorious maritime history of the Cycladic islands – it’s still functional (tourists are not allowed inside), and it has a lot of stories to tell. Coming here will make you feel like you’ve stepped through time.

It’s hard to believe that all those extravagant parties and international restaurants are just a few kilometers away. The lighthouse is an excellent addition to the fancy vibe of Mykonos – it will clear your head after a long day and night of partying in some of the best beach clubs in the world.

You Don’t Need to Spend Half of Your Day Here – Just Make Sure You Enjoy the Sunset Near This Scenic Lighthouse in Greece

It’s important to keep in mind that this isn’t one of those tours that last all day (like the tours of Delos, for example) – to see everything you need to see, a few hours will be more than enough. However, we advise you to come here in the afternoon and experience the magnificent sunset – it’s by far the best place to watch the sunset.

The sky and the sea look magical, and you can even see the nearby Tinos – it’s the kind of view that you can look at for hours. It’s the perfect place to end the day after all the excitement of the beaches, bars, and restaurants in Mykonos.

Highlights From the History of Armenistis Lighthouse

Faros Armenistis was built in 1891 as the perfect example of a unique Cycladic architectural style – it’s a whitewashed tower. The idea to build this landmark was born out of tragedy – the sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887 just north of the coast when eleven people lost their lives.

To prevent this, the Greeks built this 19-meter high tower that would guide the incoming ships and keep them safe. The original lighting mechanism was so advanced at its time that it won an award at the International Exhibition in Paris. It remained functional until 1983 when it was replaced by a modern electrical system.

If you want to see the original mechanism, it’s on display in the courtyard of the Aegean Maritime Museum in Mykonos town. The rich history and significance of this landmark add to the overall experience – this is one of the most important parts of the island’s history, and it would be a shame to skip it when you travel to the best of all Cycladic islands.
